March 19, 2024 — MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving recently announced the award recipients of the first “Open Call” for funding applications, including Enlace Comunitario. The Open Call received 6,353 applications nationwide and initially planned for 250 awards of $1 million each. Organizations top-rated by their peers advanced to a second round of review by an external Evaluation Panel recruited for experience relevant to this cause; the donor team subsequently decided to expand the awardee pool and the award amounts. Enlace Comunitario was selected as a high-scoring organizational recipient of a $2 million award.
“Enlace Comunitario is honored to receive this change-making award,” said Sara Yvonne “Bonnie” Escobar, Enlace Comunitario’s Executive Director. “Domestic violence is often framed as a taboo subject and is a service sector that is chronically underfunded. This investment in a Latina-run, immigrant-focused, culturally specific domestic violence organization will help us continue to support some of our most marginalized community members. Domestic violence intersects with and compounds so many other systemic inequities. We hope that this award will bring more attention to domestic violence as the pressing issue that it is, and why it is incredibly important to adequately fund domestic violence service providers.”
Enlace Comunitario is a culturally and linguistically specific domestic violence service provider for Central New Mexico’s Latine and immigrant communities and is one of the only domestic violence service providers in Central New Mexico that offers wraparound services.
Enlace Comunitario’s services address domestic violence through two program arms: intervention and prevention. Enlace Comunitario’s wraparound intervention services include crisis intervention; case management; housing assistance; therapy; life skills/parenting classes; financial capability training; workforce development support; and legal services. Enlace Comunitario’s prevention services operate at community and household levels through support groups, leadership development training, and educational outreach—to promote equitable, gender-affirming relationships among parents, youth, and their extended community.
“Not only will this award help us address the ongoing needs of domestic violence survivors in Central New Mexico, but it will help us ensure that Enlace Comunitario remains an anchor organization for domestic violence survivors for years to come,” said Escobar.
