If Cape Town isn’t already on your travel bucket list, take this as a sign to add it immediately. I recently had the vacation of my dreams in the South African capital, and it left me with the strongest desire to go back, thanks in large part to my heavenly stay at One&Only Cape Town, a centrally located luxury resort near all the key attractions, from the V&A Waterfront to Table Mountain and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The must-sees are endless (to be honest, I found it difficult to narrow down this list!), but the kindness and warmth of the Capetonians are truly what makes the city special.

Below, what to see, where to stay, and more in Cape Town.

What to See

Robben Island

You simply must devote time to absorb South Africa’s rich history, and a World Heritage Site is a great place to start. A quick ferry ride will get you to Robben Island, the site of the prison where former president Nelson Mandela was held during apartheid. Guided tours can be booked through the Robben Island Museum.

Aunty Nita’s Tours

Dig deeper into history by booking an experience with Anita Hermanus of Aunty Nita’s Tours. You can choose from a selection of outings, like The Forgotten Heroes, where you’ll learn about anti-apartheid activists such as Dulcie September and Ashley Kriel. You also have the option of enjoying a traditional Cape Malay meal at the home of a local “aunty,” an endearing term for older women in the community—I had the most delicious lunch prepared by chef Faldela Tolker. Nita’s welcoming nature will leave you with a true understanding of her tagline: “Come as a client, leave as family.”

Aquila Safari

It’s roughly a two-hour drive from the city center, but a trip to Aquila Safari is well worth it. You’ll be able to spot and learn about the big five—lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, and leopards—on an unforgettable guided experience.

Salon Cape Town

The ambiance at Salon is ideal for an evening of fine dining. The 10-course Journey menu draws inspiration from South Africa, France, Japan, and other countries that award-winning chef and restaurateur Luke Dale Roberts has spent time in. The duck suzette left me at a loss for words in the possible best way—pure bliss and deliciousness on one plate. Opt for a wine pairing, or alternatively, the tea pairing.

FYN Restaurant

FYN recently made its fourth appearance on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, and there’s a good reason for that. Perfectly located in the center of the city, chef Peter Tempelhoff’s fine-dining restaurant features a South African-Japanese fusion menu. Whether you make a reservation for lunch or dinner, trust that your time will be well spent.

Where to Stay

One&Only Cape Town

One&Only

Since my itinerary was jam-packed, One & Only Cape Town was the respite I needed at the end of a long day. The resort has it all—luxury rooms, an infinity pool, great dining options (including the only Nobu in Africa!), fitness classes, and amazing views. What’s more, the resort’s private marina and Table Mountain can be seen from all guest rooms and suites. Book a treatment at the spa if you’re in need of some R&R. I tried the African Journey Experience, and it revitalized my body after a long flight. Above all else, the staff will go the extra mile to ensure you have a great stay, whether that be planning experiences or, speaking from personal experience, inquiring about your pet back at home.
