Serena Williams Served a Major Look at the Met Gala

Serena Williams is used to winning on the court, of course, but tonight she won on the Met steps. The tennis star wore a metallic-gold Balenciaga gown with a long, flowing train. Her hair was adorned with a custom Jennifer Behr gold floral statement piece, and Messika earrings and rings. Williams paired the gilded ensemble with hand-embroidered black opera gloves that had Swarovski crystal accents.

This year’s Met dress code is “The Garden of Time,” which examines the intersection of time and beauty. The theme, as always, is open to interpretation. For Williams, that meant channeling an ephemeral sartorial symbol that never goes out of style: the golden goddess.

This wasn’t the first time Williams brought her A-game to the Met Gala carpet. She previously served as a co-chair for the event in 2019, alongside Harry Styles, Alessandro Michele, Lady Gaga, and Anna Wintour. For that evening’s camp theme, Williams wore a stunning yellow gown from Atelier Versace. She paired the look with Nike x Off-White Air Force One sneakers.

At last year’s Met Gala, Williams made a statement by announcing her second pregnancy on the carpet—and in Gucci, no less.

In an essay from the April 2022 issue of ELLE, Williams opened up about her family life. She shares two kids, Olympia and Adira, with husband Alexis Ohanian. “Olympia has a great sense of humor,” Williams wrote in the essay. “If you tell her to draw a bunny, she’ll draw a chicken instead, and she knows she’s making a joke. She loves to laugh. I thought I was going to be really strict, but so far I’m the more lenient parent. This kid has me under her finger. I didn’t know what kind of mom I’d be, and I still don’t know. Instead, maybe for the first time in my life, I’m just being.”
