Three Edinburgh Ryanair passengers were arrested after a flight to Lanzarote was forced to return to the capital.

Flight RK5593 took off from the the city's airport shortly after 4pm on Friday afternoon, July 5, but was seen circling the skies above a short while later before landing back in Edinburgh.

Police have since confirmed three young men, aged 22, 22 and 21, were arrested once the flight had landed - two of which were charged with a number of offences.

The third man, 22, was released without charge as footage posted online by a local news site in Lanzarote shows the moment several local officers boarded the flight and hauled the group off.

The force added how officers became aware of a "disturbance onboard" shortly after it departed Edinburgh. It is understood the flight departed once again and landed in Lanzarote later that evening.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told our sister title the Mirror: "We were made aware of a disturbance on board a flight which had departed from Edinburgh Airport during the afternoon of Friday, 5 July.

"The aircraft returned to Edinburgh and three men, 22, 22 and 21, were arrested. One of the 22-year-olds and the 21-year-old were charged with a number of offences and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

"The other 22-year-old was released without charge."

A spokeswoman for the airline said: “This flight from Edinburgh to Lanzarote (5 July) returned to Edinburgh shortly after take-off as 3 passengers became disruptive inflight. Crew called ahead for police assistance, who met the aircraft upon return to Edinburgh Airport and removed these disruptive passengers, before the flight continued to Lanzarote.

"We sincerely apologise to passengers for any inconvenience caused as a result of these disruptive passengers.”
