An Edinburgh knife attacker who was caught on camera assaulting a man in a street clash outside his home has been jailed.

Delroy Bland, 29, repeatedly struck his victim with the weapon after failing to hit him with a hammer during the assault.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that the victim, Steven McCallum, later underwent surgery to repair wounds he suffered in the attack.

Advocate depute Brian Gill KC said: "The injuries that Mr McCallum sustained were life-threatening in the absence of medical treatment." The prosecutor said that the attack victim is expected to go on to make a good physical recovery from his injuries.

Bland, of Niddrie Marischal Crescent, admitted assaulting Mr McCallum to his severe injury and to the danger of his life on October 1 last year, when he appeared in court.

He repeatedly tried to strike the victim with a hammer and repeatedly struck him on the body with a knife during the serious assault. The court heard that Bland has previous convictions for violence and been jailed for knife possession.

Mr Gill said that on the evening of September 30 last year Mr McCallum's former partner was at a pub drinking with friends. Bland was also at the bar and they had a disagreement.

In the early hours of October 1 Mr McCallum and his ex-partner drove to Bland's home.

The prosecutor said: "When they arrived Mr McCallum got out of the car. He shouted up to the accused's flat and told him to come down in a way that the accused thought was threatening."

Bland emerged from a close into the street carrying both a hammer and a knife. He started to swing the hammer at Mr McCallum, who was unarmed.

He ducked to avoid the hammer and they got into a struggle, during which Bland thrust the knife at him and stabbed him on the body.

Bland ran off down the street and Mr McCallum's former partner saw he was clutching his stomach and there was blood on his shirt.

He said: "I think I've been stabbed." He was driven to accident and emergency at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and underwent surgery to repair the wounds he sustained in the attack.

The court heard that the attack was captured on CCTV and Mr Gill said: "The footage shows the accused holding a hammer in one hand and thrusting his other hand, holding a knife, at Mr McCallum's torso."

Film of the attack was shown to the court. The court heard that initial attempts by the police to trace Bland were unsuccessful and the weapons used in the attack were not recovered.

Bland contacted police on October 10 last year to tell them he intended to hand himself in, which he later did.

The judge, Michael O'Grady KC, deferred sentence on Bland for the preparation of a background report and remanded the offender, who had been on bail, in custody.
