OAKLAND — Two people remained in critical condition Tuesday after the speeding dirt bike they were riding in a bus lane Monday night was struck by a car in East Oakland, police said.
The collision happened about 8:18 p.m. Monday in the 8000 block of International Boulevard.
Police said the dirt bike was being driven by a man in his 20s who had a 20-year-old woman as his passenger. Both are Oakland residents.
Police said the dirt bike was going westbound in the designated bus-only lane at an estimated 65 mph when it was hit by a 2001 Toyota Avalon that was making a left turn onto 80th Avenue from westbound International Boulevard.
The impact caused both the man and woman to be ejected onto the roadway.
Police said the man operating the dirt bike and the vehicle itself were picked up by a still-unidentified person, who left the woman in the roadway. The man, who suffered severe body trauma, was dropped off at a hospital by the person, who then drove away with the dirt bike, authorities said.The woman, who suffered severe head trauma, was transported from the scene of the collision by ambulance to a hospital. Police said one helmet was recovered at the scene, but they have not been able to determine which of those injured was wearing it.
The driver of the Toyota was uninjured, remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.
