NEWARK – A three-alarm wildfire scorched 34 acres Tuesday night in Newark, officials said.

The blaze was reported shortly before 4 p.m. at Eureka Drive and Stevenson Boulevard, according to Alameda County Fire Department spokesperson Cheryl Hurd.

The wind-driven fire spread quickly toward the Union Pacific railroad tracks, Hurd said, adding that trains were halted.

Firefighters worked to keep the blaze away from commercial buildings and had to contend with trees and a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. power pole going up in flames, according to Hurd.

Around 5:30 p.m., firefighters called for a third alarm and additional engines from the Hayward and Oakland fire departments were summoned to the scene, Hurd said.

The fire’s forward progress was stopped by 7 p.m. and trains were running again roughly an hour later, according to Hurd.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, Hurd said.
