FREMONT — A driver killed May 21 when his car collided with a tree, leaving a passenger injured, has been identified by authorities.

Juan Alvarez-Gallardo, 19, of Newark, died at the scene of the crash, which happened about 12:30 a.m. May 21 near the intersection of Fremont Boulevard and Thornton Avenue.

His 19-year-old passenger, also a Newark resident, was pulled from the wreckage as it started to catch fire. An on-duty Fremont police officer who was the first on the scene got the person to safety, authorities said.

It was not immediately known if the passenger was still hospitalized Wednesday. Police would only say the two men knew each other.

Police said the investigation into the crash is continuing but initial reports were that excessive speed appeared to be a significant factor. It is still unknown if drugs or alcohol were also factors.

Anyone with information may call police traffic investigators at 510-790-6760.
