A 5-year-old boy died after a possible drowning incident on Bethel Island Saturday, according to the Contra Costa County Sherriff’s office.

At around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, county sheriff officers responded to a report of a missing child, possibly due to drowning, at the 400 block of Halcyon Place in Bethel island in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. A rescue swimmer found the boy submerged in a cove at about 5:10 p.m., said Capt. Joe Ottolini, a spokesperson for the district.

The child received CPR and was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The boy was reportedly visiting his grandparents on the island.

Ottolini said circumstances of the drowning weren’t clear because of language differences.

The child’s name has yet to be publicly released.
