Discover July’s artful delights: Exhibits, classes, shows and local talent galore

Jason Lythgoe

As we melt in the heart of summer, Durango Arts Center invites you to immerse yourselves in a whirlwind of creativity, community and cultural celebration throughout the month of July.

Kicking off the month is the eagerly anticipated “That’s So Durango” gallery exhibit opening its doors Friday during this month’s First Friday gallery walk. This showcase proudly features the works of talented local artists, capturing the essence of Durango. From sweeping landscapes, paper mosaics, animal portraits to reliefs made out of mushrooms – that’s right, mushrooms – Durango is forever a place of beauty, adventure, art, music, parking problems, flannels, dogs and bikes. It’s a place where locals and visitors come together to celebrate art in all its forms, ensuring that Durango remains a vibrant cultural hub throughout the summer months and beyond.

The spotlight then shifts to the stage with the uproarious comedy “I Hate Hamlet” by Paul Rudnick, premiering on July 12. Running Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. until July 28, this play promises laughs aplenty as it explores the hilarious clash between a cynical TV actor and the ghost of John Barrymore. “I Hate Hamlet” is a must-see for theater enthusiasts and comedy lovers. Directed by Monica DiBiasio, DAC’s current artistic/managing director (aka Theatre Goddess) and starring an all-local cast of six, this show is guaranteed to entertain.

“It’s a love letter to the art of theater,” DiBiasio says. “The play uses comedy and Shakespeare to create a world where, like being on a stage ... anything is possible.”

But don’t worry, it’s not a Shakespeare show! If you also hate Hamlet, then this show is for you, too.

During the daytime hours this summer, the DAC is full of youthful energy as our youth theater and art camps take center stage. From acting to painting, young creatives are immersed in a nurturing environment where they can explore their talents and unleash their imagination. It’s a testament to Durango’s commitment to fostering the next generation of artists and performers.

For adults seeking to have a little creative fun, July at DAC offers a wide range of classes. Whether it’s mastering the pottery wheel, capturing the essence of Durango in watercolors or creating stunning stained glass pieces, there’s a workshop to suit every interest and skill level. Block printing, another highlight of the month, allows participants to craft unique designs that reflect Durango’s eclectic charm. Ever been to one of our figure drawing classes? Imagine if the model had four legs instead of two: Figure Drawing: Dynamic Dogs is a great way to meet a new furry friend while honing your drawing skills. It’s a nonstop lineup all month long.

So mark your calendars, gather your friends and family, and join us at DAC this month. Whether you’re here to laugh, learn, create or simply soak in the artistic ambience, you’re sure to find something to delight and inspire. Because in Durango, art is not just a pastime – it’s a way of life.
