And the West is History: Horse-drawn parade float – 1910

Until the Spanish Trails Fiesta started in the 1930s, the annual Fourth of July celebration was La Plata County’s biggest public event of the year. This patriotic-themed float seen in the 1000 block of Main Avenue and pulled by six matching black horses was typical of the entries that year. Wet weather created a muddy street. Note the trolley tracks running down the center of Main. This photo is one of 220 to appear in the upcoming “Images of America – La Plata County” to be published in July. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org (Catalog Number: 96.08.12 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
