Denver weather: Up to 3 inches of snow in the city, up to a foot in mountains

A spring storm will coat mostly grassy areas of the Denver metro area with up to 3 inches of snow and hit the mountains with up to a foot of new snow, forecasters say.

Snow is expected Wednesday morning in the foothills and mountains, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. Between 6 to 12 inches of snow is expected in the mountains.

Rain showers are expected mainly after 9 a.m. Widespread dense fog will begin to dissipate around 11 a.m., the NWS says. Winds could gust up to 22 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent. The high temperature will be around 44 degrees in Denver on Wednesday.

Rain could turn into snow around 7 p.m. in the Denver metro area. New snow accumulation of between a trace to 2 inches of snow is forecast. Temperatures will dip below freezing to around 31 degrees Wednesday night.

It will continue to snow through the night, with another inch of snow expected before 8 a.m. Thursday, the NWS says. Rain is expected through 7 p.m., when it could begin to snow in some areas, the NWS says. It could snow through the night. The low temperature will be around 33 degrees.

It will be mostly cloudy Friday with a high temperature of 56 degrees.

The weekend will be mostly sunny with high temperatures of 65 degrees on Saturday and 71 on Sunday.
