An Adams County Sheriff’s Office commander has been charged with careless driving resulting in death in connection with a March crash near Bennett in which an 85-year-old woman was killed.

John Paul Bitterman, 43, was on duty on March 29 heading west on East 88th Avenue in a marked patrol car when his vehicle collided with another vehicle at the intersection with Colorado 79, according to the district attorney’s office. The crash happened about 7 miles north of Bennett.

Eira Saenz Sandoval, 85, died in the crash and Maria Del Refugio Corral Saenz, 58, was injured, according to a news release.

Bitterman has been charged with careless driving resulting in death and careless driving causing bodily injury, both traffic offenses, the release stated.

Bitterman, who has been served with a summons and complaint, is scheduled to be arraigned June 10. He also was injured in the head-on collision.
