The Washington Nationals' top prospect has been called up to the big leagues.
Outfielder James Wood will make his Major League debut at 6:45 p.m. Monday as the Nationals open a four-game home series against the New York Mets. Wood is hitting sixth in the lineup and playing left field.
Wood, 21, is the No. 3 prospect in the Major League Baseball pipeline, and at 6-foot-4, 234 pounds, Wood has power and speed. He leads Triple-A players who qualify with a .353 average, .463 on-base percentage and 1.058 OPS with the Rochester Red Wings. Wood also has 16 doubles, 10 home runs, 37 RBI, 44 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 52 games this year for Rochester.
Wood was named International League Player of the Month for May but missed time in late May and June with tightness in his right hamstring. He returned June 18 and batted .333 (8-for-24) with a home run in the last seven games with Rochester.
The Nationals posted a video on X of Red Wings manager Matthew LeCroy delivered the news to Wood.
"I'm proud of the person you are," LeCroy said. "Don't ever change because I think you're going to play for a long, long time now. You're going to the show,"
Wood rose from Single-A to the majors in less than two years. He was taken in the second round by the San Diego Padres in the 2021 MLB Draft. Wood was acquired by the Nationals in an eight-player blockbuster trade that sent Juan Soto and Josh Bell to the Padres in 2022.
