Delaware Park has canceled Saturday's thoroughbred racing due to excessive heat, the Stanton track announced.

The track was "acting upon the recommendation of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission (DTRC) veterinarians and stewards," it said, "due to the excessive heat index forecasted by the National Weather Service to be at or above 105º for the region."

New Castle County, Kent County and inland Sussex County are under an excessive heat warning until 8 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Eventual second-place finisher Classy Edition (left) takes the early lead on the front stretch as Idiomatic, with Florent Geroux up (right), is content to settle into fifth position out of six horses in the $500,000 Delaware Handicap, Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Delaware Park. Idiomatic edged Classy Edition to win the race at 1 and 3/16 miles.

Saturday's live racing, which features several stakes races plus the $300,000 F=Grade II Delaware Oaks, has been rescheduled for Monday afternoon.

Sunday's schedule is still on, with the first post at 12:30 p.m. The ninth race is the 87th running of Delaware Park's biggest annual event, the $500,000 Grade II Delaware Handicap.
