Woman killed trying to cross I-495 Sunday east of Wilmington

A 38-year-old woman was killed Sunday night as she tried to walk across I-495 in the Fox Point area, Delaware State Police said.

The woman, from Elkton, Maryland, will not be identified by police until her family is notified.

The woman was trying to cross from the left side of north I-495 to the right side of the interstate about 11:40 p.m., when police said she was struck by a 2015 Honda Accord that was northbound, north of Edgemoor Road.

The woman was not wearing any reflective clothing or carrying a flashlight, police said.

After the collision, the Honda came to a stop on the left shoulder.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The Honda driver was not injured.

During the investigation, police found the woman's 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee about a quarter mile north of the crash scene. The Jeep was on the right shoulder with its hazard lights on.

Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact investigators at (302) 365-8485. Information may also be provided by sending a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) 847-3333.
