Welcome to the bungalow: JW Anderson gets nostalgic for your nan

Models came straight from your granny’s house and onto the catwalk for the designer’s AW24 London Fashion Week show – here’s everything you need to know

Sunday morning at London Fashion Week and we’re at a West London leisure centre to see what Jonathan Anderson has in store for us for the coming AW24 season. With Charli XCX, Hari Nef, and Tracey Emin on the front row, here’s everything you need to know.

A SET & CURL IS SO HOT RIGHT NOW

JW Anderson fans can get the look for less next season, with a silvery curled hair piece like one your granny might stick on seen across a swathe of models. Did somebody say… wig? Yes, that was Jonathan.

JW PHONE HOME!

The soundtrack spoke of how making a little call could brighten someone’s day, while halfway through came the sound of fingers jabbing at an old school landline phone and its subsequent ring-ring-ring. It follows on from the sounds of dial-up internet ringing out at Comme des Garçons, and Daniel Roseberry sending looks made from obsolete tech round the runway at Schiaparelli. Is the analogue era next in fashion?

THE CLOTHES GAVE GRANNY CHIC

Models came down the runway wearing big, oversized coats in tactile English tweeds, while BHS-style knit undies got a high fashion upgrade in navy and pearl. Slinky column dresses looked like they’d been crafted from window nets, and came complete with curtain-twitched tassels that swung elegantly from shoulders and waistlines. Elsewhere, neat jackets with nipped waists were matched with sporty satin shorts and there was a plethora of chunky homespun knits. All looks were finished with mega cosy suede house slippers trimmed with shearling.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

”Ultimately, fashion has to somehow look at what’s happening in society. We are nearly more excited about the idea of nostalgia than we have ever been. Which is not a bad thing. Maybe it’s quite exciting, maybe it’s not so scary.” So it looks like, this season, Anderson tapped into that nostalgia in a very literal way, because what’s more nostalgic than trips to your grandma’s house when you’re a little kid? While other designers might attempt to tap into specific time periods or some nebulous kind of “Y2K” aesthetic, we can always trust Anderson for a wry and ironic take on an oversaturated trend. You want nostalgia? Well here’s 40 models in grandma wigs x
