Over the past few years, Billie Eilish has highlighted the issues she has faced growing up in the spotlight, from body dysmorphia and shaming to being sexualised online.
Now, in a new interview for Vanity Fair – shot by former Dazed 100er Quil Lemons – the singer has opened up further about her “horrible body relationship” that caused her to self-harm. “The reason I used to cut myself was because of my body,” she says. “To be quite honest with you, I only started wearing baggy clothes because of my body.”
Elsewhere, Eilish talks about taking diet pills when her relationship with her body was at its worst. “I wasn't really eating. I was, like, starving myself,” she explains. “I remember taking a pill that told me that it would make me lose weight and it only made me pee the bed – when I was 12.”
While she is in a much better place now, she explains that her fame exacerbated the situation, with trolls commenting on her body and her choice of baggy fit clothing. “I thought that I would be the only one dealing with my hatred for my body, but I guess the internet also hates my body. So that’s great.”
