Former Oak Cliff Faith Family star JT Toppin transfers from New Mexico to Texas Tech

Toppin chose the Red Raiders after withdrawing from NBA draft consideration.

Grant McCasland brought an important piece to Lubbock via the transfer portal on Tuesday.

Former New Mexico forward JT Toppin, last season’s Mountain West Freshman of the Year and former star at Oak Cliff Faith Family, has transferred to Texas Tech after withdrawing his name from NBA draft consideration, the school announced.

The 6-9 forward from Dallas made an immediate impact as a freshman, averaging 12.4 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. He was named to the second-team All-Mountain West team and shot 62.3% from the field, ranking 11th nationally in that category.

Toppin was a four-star recruit in high school and led Faith Family to back-to-back Class 4A state titles in 2022 and 2023.

He was the MVP of the 2023 state title game after he had 20 points and seven rebounds in a 70-56 win over Houston Washington, and he was named the state’s 4A player of the year that season.
