Texas A&M baseball announces hiring of Michael Earley as head coach

The Texas A&M baseball program has found its replacement for head coach Jim Schlossnagle.

The program announced the hiring Sunday of former A&M hitting coach Michael Earley, who left the program with Schlossnagle to be a part of his new staff in Austin.

“I am happy to announce that Michael Earley has been hired as our new Aggie baseball head coach,” athletic director Trev Alberts said in a statement. “Michael is a very talented coach and recruiter, but what stood out to me was his character and the relationships he has built with his current and former players. During our interview process he was really impressive. I think it helps that he knows our current roster, which finished second in the country, and he also knows Aggieland and the 12th Man. I am excited about the future of Aggie baseball. Please help me welcome home Michael and his family back to Aggieland.”

Earley, 36, was an assistant at A&M under Schlossnagle the past three seasons and an assistant at Arizona State the previous five years.

“My family and I couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity,” Earley said in a statement. “Thank you, General Welsh and Trev Alberts for putting your trust in me. Being a part of this University and this program are a dream come true. I will not let you down. See you in Omaha!”

Schlossnagle, the ex-TCU coach who built Texas A&M into a national power in three years and led the Aggies to the brink of this season’s national championship, left the university last week to become coach at arch-rival Texas.

“I didn’t do this to spite anybody,” Schlossnagle said during his introductory press conference at UT. “Many people on the A&M side will say this wasn’t done the right way. I just don’t know any other way it could have been done.”

Schlossnagle led the Aggies to the College World Series in two of his three seasons with the program. Texas A&M just missed its first national championship on Monday when the Aggies lost a best-of-three series to SEC rival Tennessee in the CWS.

He takes over a Texas program with a deep history of success and six national titles, but none since 2005.

Before arriving at Texas A&M in 2022, Schlossnagle coached TCU from 2004-2021, leading the Horned Frogs to the CWS five times, including four in a row from 2014-2017.
