Mavericks’ trade of Tim Hardaway Jr. to Pistons becomes official, full terms revealed

Plus, Dallas’ signing of forward Naji Marshall was made official Saturday night.

Update:
This post has been updated to include the official signing of Naji Marshall.

Just over a week after it was first reported, the Dallas Mavericks’ trade of Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Detroit Pistons has become official.

The Mavericks on Saturday announced the full terms of the deal, which will net them guard Quentin Grimes.

Along with Hardaway, Dallas sent three second-round picks to Detroit: its 2025 pick via Toronto, a 2028 pick from Miami and another 2028 pick that will be the less favorable of those between Charlotte or the Los Angeles Clippers.

Hardaway arrived in Dallas from New York during the 2018-19 season as a part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade. He spent almost six seasons in Dallas, averaging 15.2 points while shooting 37% on 3-pointers.

He spent most of last season serving as the Mavericks’ sixth man, averaging 14.4 points in 79 games during the regular season. However, after moves to acquire P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford before the trade deadline in February, Hardaway began to lose further minutes in the rotation.

Hardaway’s role decreased even more during the Mavericks’ run to the NBA Finals. In the playoffs, he averaged 4.4 points in 12.7 minutes per game.

After spending the first three seasons of his career with New York, Grimes was traded to Detroit in the middle of last season. He played in just six games during his brief tenure in Detroit because of lingering muscle soreness related to a knee injury suffered in January. For his career, he averages 8.5 points and shoots 37.1% from three.

Grimes will wear No. 5 for the Mavericks.

“Quentin provides us with another young, versatile ball handler who can make shots,” general manager Nico Harrison said in a team news release. “We’re a young team with a lot of energy, and we’re excited to incorporate his athleticism and ability to play both on and off the ball. His toughness in defending multiple positions, is exactly the complement we’re hoping to see here in Dallas.”

In addition to Grimes, the Mavericks made moves to add guard Klay Thompson and forward Naji Marshall. The signing of Marshall was made official Saturday night.

“The addition of Naji enhances our team’s defensive versatility, rebounding, and playmaking abilities,” Harrison said in a statement. “He plays with great energy, and as one of the top competitors within the NBA, we are eager to see him contribute to our success.”

Dallas’ Thompson move hasn’t yet been finalized since the NBA’s moratorium was lifted at 11 a.m. Saturday.
