Rep. David Cook of Mansfield said Thursday during the 87th Legislative Session that a teacher had been shot in the back and that the bullet was within an inch of “far different results.”

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, a teacher was attempting to break up the fight that allegedly led to the shooting.

State records show Pettitt as a certified teacher, and he is listed on the school’s website as a teacher. According to public records, Pettitt is an Arlington resident.

A woman who identified herself as his mother said late Wednesday that the family was not issuing a comment.

The suspect in the shooting, 18-year-old Timothy George Simpkins, turned himself in Wednesday with the help of an attorney, but it is unclear who is representing him. Simpkins faces three counts of aggravated assault.

Zacchaeus Selby, Eyimofe Olawepo and Pariesa Altman were also listed in the bond document as people Simpkins should avoid.

Arlington police spokesperson Tim Ciesco confirmed to The Dallas Morning News that Pettitt was the teacher who was shot and that Selby is the student who was shot. Olawepo and Altman are both named as witnesses, Ciesco said.

Their ages are unclear, but police said Wednesday that other victims include a 15-year-old boy who is in critical condition and a teenage girl who had what police said was a small abrasion. A fourth person had minor injuries.

GoFundMe account has been set up to help Selby’s family with medical expenses.
