A photo of Jordan Pickford has sent football fans into a spin with many claiming the Three Lions' shot-stopper looks unrecognisable.

In the snap, taken by team captain Harry Kane, the Everton No1 is seen sitting with the skipper alongside Luke Shaw and Tom Heaton, but the picture has sent fans into meltdown due to a change in Pickford's hairstyle. The 30-year-old is usually noted for his trademark cut which is a gel laden, slicked-back style.

Yet, in the selfie posted by Bayern Munich striker Kane, Pickford's hair is pushed forward giving him a strikingly different look. Many fans have responded to Kane's tweet in disbelief at just how different the former Sunderland man looks with many commenting that he resembles England team-mate Anthony Gordon more than he does himself.

Kane's stirring tweet, posted after England's win over Switzerland, was captioned 'Togetherness – the whole group of players and staff! Never say die! What a win'. However, it was Pickford's hair that really made the headlines.

England fans were quick to comment under Kane's post with one saying: "I thought that was Gordon at first glance lol", while another simply added: "No way that’s Pickford".

Some fans still couldn't make out the country's No1 keeper despite staring at the photo for a significant amount of time, with a third saying: "Still couldn't recognise him even after reading this tweet".

One common observation from Pickford's relaxed look seemed to be that he resembled Newcastle's Gordon, with a fourth poster saying: "Just sat here 5 minutes and only just realised it's Pickford not Gordon loool". Another, paying tribute to the Three Lions star's penalty shoot-out heroism – and alluding to a possible superhero dual identity – said: "Clark Kent on a normal day, Superman on match day".

One other fan was slightly less complimentary saying: "He looks about 13 now", while a bewildered poster shared the sentiments of many saying: "I'm still not sure if that IS him or not".

Pickford, complete with his slicked-back look, was widely praised for his goalkeeping heroics on Saturday as England squeezed past Switzerland on penalties to set up a semi-final date with the Netherlands in Dortmund on Wednesday.

The Everton keeper saved Manuel Akanji's strike from the spot to give Gareth Southgate's team a huge advantage as all five of England's takers slotted home. As well as his quarter-final showing, the 30-year-old also claimed his 11th clean sheet at a tournament in England's 0-0 group stage stalemate with Slovenia, with the shutout moving Pickford clear of Peter Shilton to claim the record.
