Many people go all out when it comes to popping the question to their other halves.

But before he could get down on one knee, he thought it'd be a laugh to fake a proposal by pretending to tie his shoe instead. The man didn't get the reaction he was after whatsoever, though.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) account @Fesshole, the fella spilled the beans on his botched proposal attempt this week, and let's just say, peeps are feeling proper gutted for him.

He posted: "Took g/f to Venice, planning to propose to her. But first I thought I'd pull a prank where I pretend to get down on a knee to propose, but it's actually to tie my shoe.

"I did this and my g/f's reaction was 'Oh thank God, I thought you were going to propose'. Didn't propose."

Since hitting the social waves, the tale has gone viral, racking up 1.4million views and counting.

Many reckon this is the beginning of the end for the couple, with one user commenting: "If a woman says no to a proposal, the relationship is over sooner or later. Keeping options open is non committal."

Another suggested: "Dump her immediately." While someone else chimed in: "Might be lucky and just didn't want a public proposal? Otherwise next destination is likely Single Town."

One woman confessed she'd experienced the same scenario herself, saying: "Same happened to me in Paris! Married the right one 5 years later."

On the contrary, someone else suggested that wedlock isn't everything. They noted: "It's not compulsory to get married. Living separately is fantastic in my opinion."

Others thought the bloke should address the matter with his girlfriend. One wrote: "That would be your exact moment to talk about that - why is communication such an alien concept to some people?.

Another agreed: "I don't understand people proposing without talking about getting married first.."

Someone else also said the woman may have been hiding her real feelings, saying: "Jokes on you. She said that to hide her disappointment."

Either way, it's evident they need a serious heart-to-heart to decipher what's truly afoot.
