As we age, many of us will turn to using more makeup to mask signs of ageing.
But one make-up artist's warned some of us could be doing it completely wrong and will actually end up looking older in the process.
Mayra Lopez, from Houston, Texas, is known for sharing her tips for those who are “35 and beyond” and want to look younger. But one clip she shared left fans baffled after she revealed how five common errors could actually be making you look older.
In the video, which has gained more than 447,000 likes, she explained that the placement of your concealer and eyeliner can add years on you. She also revealed that eyeshadow and contour could cause problems too – noting that "less is more" when it comes to anti-ageing.
She said in the caption: "These little mistakes will make the biggest difference in your makeup game! I love helping women of all ages feel confident and beautiful in their own skin!"
Mayra illustrated her point by using the same makeup products on both sides of her face to show the difference her application methods can make. For eyebrow enthusiasts, Mayra emphasised the significance of an upward technique rather than blocking them in and dragging them down.
She claimed lifting the brows is better, given skin sags with age.. Her method involved brushing the hairs upward to create a natural lift, followed by filling them into the eye's outer edge.
When it came to eyeliner, the expert suggested that a subtle, upward wing at the corner could enhance the eyes' lifted look instead of drawing the liner downwards. Regarding eye shadow, a shimmer can still be worn.
However, it should not be applied on the brow bone, especially if the eyes are hooded; this could accentuate the hooding. She recommended using a light, matte shade to highlight that area instead.
For concealer, Mayra advised against the heavy-handed application under the eyes, which can lead to a patchy and oily appearance. Instead, people should target the inner and outer corners of the eyes. Colour correcting beforehand can help prevent concealment issues.
Lastly, when applying contour and blush, she warned that applying contour too low on the face could create an illusion of sagging. She recommended placing the contour just above the hollows of the cheeks for a lifted effect.
