Fired-up Judy Murray claims her critics don't understand "sarcasm" after appearing to dig out Emma Raducanu for pulling out of a mixed doubles farewell to her son Andy.

The Scottish tennis coach has come in for heavy criticism over the past day since she replied 'Yes, astonishing' to a tweet from dumbfounded commentator Marcus Buckland over the former US Open's champion call to cancel and deny the Scottish tennis icon one final appearance at SW19. Judy continued swinging on social media and posted an image on her Instagram from Serena Williams which talked-up the privilege of playing mixed doubles with the two-time Wimbledon champion – a post which many onlookers found more hurtful than her initial reply.

But Judy, breaking her silence on Sunday morning, is asking what the fuss is all about by merely claiming she was being sarcastic and understanding Raducanu featuring in the Wimbledon main event Saturday slot before playing singles on the Sunday is an understandable reason to reconsider her obligations to compete with her son.

Judy, writing on her X account which has been shut off to non-followers, wrote: "Not sure anyone understands sarcasm these days. Pretty sure the scheduling (fourth match court one with a singles following day) will have played a major part in any decision making."

Some fans aren't buying it and are pointing to the Instagram post which used Williams' quote. Raducanu is due back out on centre court today where she will take on Lulu Sun as she seeks her first appearance in a major quarter final since leaving the competition on their knees at Flushing Meadows three years ago.
