Apple's newest iOS update will prohibit certain iPhone models from using the latest AI-powered features due to their age.

Those who are still using iPhones that were initially released before 2018 will not be able to utilise the latest iOS 18 update, reports the Mirror.

The older models - such as the SE and 8 Plus versions - will not be compatible as their hardware chips will be outdated and won't be able to keep up with the newest features.

The iOS update will be Apple's "biggest" one yet and reports have said that the tech giants may partner with Google's AI, Gemini, to write copy and create images based on simple prompts.

Apple is set to release the operating system at the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) which will run from June 10 until June 14. The firm will begin with a keynote speech that typically details all the newest iOS systems for iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and TV.

There is potentially going to be an update for those who own the newly released Vision Pro 3D camera.

In order to be compatible with the latest iOS update, your iPhone will need the A12 Bionic chip which was not introduced until the XR and XS models were released back in 2018. Models with Apple's A11 Bionic chip - which include the iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus models - or the A10 Fusion chip will not be unable to work with the new update.

Apple tend to discontinue the models that will be unable to deal with the latest operating systems - but this time, they will be keeping the seventh and eighth series.

People with a less modern version of the iPhone will also no longer be able to access any future software updates as well, which will render them useless in the long run.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman explained that the AI features being introduced will improve Siri and will help it give people more accurate responses. The Message app will also "field questions and auto-complete sentences" with these new features.

Gurman discussed the new features in his Power On newsletter, writing: "I'm told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company's history. With that knowledge, Apple's developers conference in June should be pretty exciting."

List of iPhones that will not be compatible with the iOS 18 update:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone SE 1st Gen
