At the start of the clip, a woman sits at a table looking dumbstruck at the dumpling, and clambers onto her dining room table to get a look at it.

Sitting on a leaf in its steamer, the dumpling can be seen to have a baby's facial features - and it is even crying and sneezing.

First, two legs pop out of the bottom of the dumpling. Then, after a bit of shaking, a torso and a pair of arms grow in as well.

The woman gently lifts the dumpling-baby with both her hands and smiles warmly down at it as it begins to laugh.

Bao is helmed by Domee Shee, the first woman Pixar short director, and according to its IMDb page the woman in the film is suffering from empty nest syndrome.

As Disney wrote when they tweeted the clip, the short film will play in movie theaters ahead of showings of Incredibles 2, a sequel to 2004's The Incredibles.

Incredibles 2 is due out June 15 and sees the return of the original movie's director Brad Bird, as well as its titular superhero family.

Disney Pixar's shorts do often play ahead of their feature films - and several of these shorts have been nominated for Academy Awards.

Only two of these actually won the Oscar - For The Birds, which played ahead of Monsters, Inc., and Piper, the companion piece to Finding Dory.
