'She's going to be brilliant': Peter Capaldi reveals he has checked in with new Doctor Who Jodie Whittaker to give her some advice... as he and co-star Pearl Mackie attend Comic Con
She divided Doctor Who fans when she was announced as the 13th incarnation of the time-travelling alien last Sunday.
But Jodie Whittaker has the backing of outgoing Doctor Peter Capaldi, who checked in with her to give her some advice.
The Scottish actor, 59, told Jodie, 35, to make the most of the role and was pleased to her she was a fan of the long-running sci-fi show.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at Comic Con, Peter said: 'I said just enjoy it because it’s absolutely incredible.
'She’ll be fabulous. It was lovely to speak to her and see how much affection and passion she has for the show. She’s going to be brilliant.'
Peter currently plays the 12th incarnation of the two-hearted Gallifreyan and will make his last outing as the Doctor on Christmas Day.
The actor made sure he was making the most of his final months as the iconic alien as he made an appearance at San Diego Comic Con with outgoing co-stars Pearl Mackie and Michelle Gomez, who played Bill and Missy.

Executive producer Steven Moffat, who joined the actors at the convention, will also leave the hit show after Christmas.
Their appearance at Comic Con comes after Jodie Whittaker was announced as the 13th incarnation of the Doctor, making her the first woman to play the role.
The move divided Whovians around the world, but Steven, 55, said there has been an 'imaginary backlash' and criticism of the casting has been overblown.

'Imaginary backlash': Steven Moffat said criticism over the casting of Jodie was overblown and said most Doctor Who fans were delighted with the announcement
Steven Moffat told Empire: 'It was something like 80 per cent of social media was thrilled. Doctor Who fans here are absolutely thrilled about Jodie being the Doctor.
'There has been nothing - only a few tiny made people somewhere. The amount of journalism being devoted to saying there's been some huge reaction - there hasn't been.
'In fact most of the fans aren't even reacting to the fact it's a female Doctor, they are saying Jodie Whittaker is a brilliant actor what a good piece of casting.'

The Broadchurch actress was revealed as Peter Capaldi's successor as the Time Lord last Sunday afternoon after the Wimbledon Men's Final and her reveal has been watched online more than 16 million times.
In an interview with the BBC, Jodie said: 'It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you're told you can and can't be.
'It feels incredible.'

She also reassured fans to 'not be scared by my gender'.
'Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that's exciting about change,' she said, adding: 'The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.'
While most fans praised the BBC and the show's writers for choosing a female actress, some slammed the decision as 'political correctness gone mad'.
