The main character just so happens to borrow a guitar from late singer Ernesto de la Cruz following his death.
The 12-year-old heads over to the musician's grave to take the instrument when something extraordinary yet pretty creepy happens.
Miguel is sent over to the Land of the Dead where he meets a bunch of family members who were involved in banning music in past generations.

Director Lee Unkrich spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the movie and how it's definitely not going to be like any other Pixar classic.
'The day [animator] John Lasseter gave the thumbs up for this movie, I immediately felt this huge weight drop onto my shoulders because I knew that we were doing something different than we had ever made at the studio.'
'For the first time, we were going to have this enormous responsibility to do right by this culture and not lapse into stereotype of cliche.'
