This Morning hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard are left in shock as they suffer a messy mishap

This Morning hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard suffered a hilarious mishap in the studio just moments before they went live on air on Monday.

As the pair were getting ready to present the daytime show, their ITV co-host Lorraine Kelly, 64, cut to the This Morning set to check in on the duo to find out what would be coming up.

But Lorraine and the viewers at home were faced with scenes of chaos as Cat, 47, and Ben, 49, revealed there had been a blunder while filming - and it involved some unique guests.

The presenters had brought in two alpacas to film a segment of the programme, who left a 'bit of a protest' on the floor.

Ben admitted: 'Now, we've had a bit of a mishap in the studio already. Because we brought in a couple of alpacas, Lorraine, called Bob and Dave.'

They then played some pre-recorded footage of the animals going to the toilet in the middle of the This Morning studio, which appeared to be a messy affair.

Shocked, Lorraine reacted: 'Oh, thanks for that - oh no!,' with Cat chiming in with: 'There was a bit of a protest [with the alpacas], it didn't stop!'

Ben joked: 'We're still tidying up, Lorraine,' just before the clip cut off ahead of This Morning's scheduled start time at 10am.

'Oh, good luck you two, get your shovels and get sorted! Not to be missed as always,' Lorraine laughed.

Viewers quickly rushed to X (formerly Twitter) to react to the footage, quipping: 

'#thismorning @thismorning Is everyone enjoying their breakfast after that alpaca clip?'

'Why am I seeing an alpaca having a dump? #ThisMorning.'

'They have a suspicious look those alpacas #ThisMorning.'

'Now I would enter the competition if I could win a herd of alpacas #ThisMorning.'

'Don't know why they haven't took that rug up what the alpacas standing on what possibly could happen #ThisMorning.'

'Come on, alpaca, spit on someone #ThisMorning.'

During the show, singer Russell Watson made an appearance as he celebrated 25 years of his career - and also got the chance to interact with the animals.

The star spoke to Cat and Ben about how he now lives on a farm and has a 'huge amount' of animals - including alpacas, who he claims are 'great' for his mental health.

Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary will reportedly remain on This Morning as the show's main hosts this summer, after ITV bosses won a dramatic tug-of-war with rival channels.

The show is said to be pinning hopes of a ratings boost on the pair after a fall since Cat and Ben took over the main roles in March.

Dermot, 51, and Alison, 49, had both been booked on programmes for rival stations, leaving ITV to go all-out to secure them for the summer schedule.

It was rumoured that Craig Doyle and Josie Gibson would possibly be stepping into the roles, but a source confirmed to The Sun that Friday hosts Alison and Dermot were locked in for weeks to come.

'Viewers love Alison and Dermot so locking them in for the summer was a priority,' they said.

'Josie and Craig are great but execs couldn’t risk losing their best names when a spotlight's on the show.

'It's hoped a decent summer run from Ali and Dermot could get things off to a head-start when Cat and Ben return in September.'

Viewing figures for the morning show have halved to as low as 486,000 since Cat and Ben's arrival.

However, last Friday's show - which was hosted by Alison and Dermot - reached 620,000.
