Reese Witherspoon looked sensational as she celebrated Independence Day with a game of pickleball on Thursday. 

The Legally Blonde star, 48, flashed her toned abs as she posed up a storm in a black and white checked tennis co-ord. 

The actress paired a crop top with a matching mini skirt as she beamed in snaps alongside her niece Draper. 

Reese completed the look with a pink baseball cap adorned with a yellow smiley face as she held her pickleball racket. 

She captioned the snap: 'In our pickleball era'. 

Originating in the US, pickleball combines elements from badminton, tennis, and ping pong in what is becoming one of the most popular racket sports. 

In another snap Reese posed with her niece as they both wore matching orange hats which read 'Happy'. 

Taking to her Instagram Story, Reese also shared a snap of the US flag as she gave a 'Happy 4th Of July' shout out to her fans.

Posing next to the flag, she looked effortlessly chic in a white dress with ruffled sleeves and stylish shades. 

Other celebrities also marked the day as Mark Wahlberg was seen with his family in a group photo as he wrote in his caption: 'Wishing my fellow Americans a happy and safe 4th of July!! ❤️.'

Meanwhile Katy Perry showcased her jaw-dropping figure in a patriotic bikini, featuring the American flag bikini across her chest, while celebrating Independence Day.

The 39-year-old superstar started the Fourth of July off with a bang as she shared a sizzling snap of herself in a patriotic top, covered in rhinestones, and a red banana with white polka dots.

Independence Day - known colloquially as the Fourth of July - is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches, and ceremonies.

But it was founded for a political move. 

Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the Declaration of Independence.

It was ratified by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, establishing the United States of America.

The Founding Father delegates of the Second Continental Congress declared that the Thirteen Colonies were no longer subject (and subordinate) to the monarch of Britain, King George III.

They were now united, free, and independent states.

The Congress voted to approve independence by passing the Lee Resolution on July 2 and adopted the Declaration of Independence two days later, on July 4.
