Natalie Portman dives into a mysterious world in 1966 Baltimore in the upcoming Apple TV+ series Lady In The Lake.

The action centers around the mysterious disappearance of a young Black woman on Thanksgiving Day that 'grips' Baltimore and causes the lives of two women to 'converge on a fatal collision course,' according to the AppleTV+ synopsis.

Portman – who was seen with Paul Mescal lately – plays Jewish housewife Maddie Schwartz who becomes obsessed with the disappearance of Cleo Johnson.

She tries to reinvent herself as an investigative journalist so that she can leave her secret past behind.

'I saw you once, Maddie Schwartz,' Cleo narrates in the trailer. 'Before any of this began, I saw you. Alive, I was Cleo Johnson.

'But in my death, I became the lady in the lake. Your writing dreams ruined your life. Now, you wanted those same dreams to rewrite it. But why did you need to drag my dead body into it?'

Moses Ingram plays Cleo, a mother 'navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while struggling to provide for her family.'

'Their disparate lives seem parallel at first, but when Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo's mystifying death, a chasm opens that puts everyone around them in danger,' the synopsis adds, describing it as an 'unexpected tale of the price women pay for their dreams.'

The Lady In The Lake also stars Y'lan Noel, Brett Gelman, Byron Bowers, Noah Jupe, Josiah Cross, Mikey Madison and Pruitt Taylor Vince.

The trailed dropped on Tuesday.

It starts with Maddie doing housework before she breaks a plate and exclaims she 'can't just be someone's wife.'

She packs a suitcase and leaves her home and she's standing in the middle of a floor covered in newspaper clippings as Cleo's voiceover continues.

'You wanted to tell everyone's story but your own,' Cleo says as scenes from both their lives flash on screen.

At the end of the trailer, Maggie picks up a picture of herself from the pile of newspaper clippings.

'Every time someone turns up dead in the lake, it does seem to lead back to you,' a voice says.

Portman, 43, talked about why the Lady In The Lake 'appealed' to her with People, saying: 'I think, the basis of just a woman wanting to be free. I think is theme that's interesting to me.

'Another is just being a Jewish woman in Baltimore in the 1960s.

'My grandmother was from Baltimore, and so there was a lot of imagination for me about what that time was like.

'And then the other thing that was interesting to me was exploring how someone who's oppressed can also be an oppressor,' she added.
