Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes suffered a heartbreaking loss on Sunday night when he said goodbye forever to a beloved family member.

The radio star, 53, announced the death of his dog Barkly live on his Hughesy, Ed and Erin breakfast show Monday morning, sharing footage of it to Instagram.

Choking up as he shared an emotional tribute for the elderly pooch, Hughesy revealed the rescue hound was 17-years-old when he passed.

'We lost our dog last night, Barkly, who has been with us for 17 years. Beautiful member of the family,' Hughesy said in an emotional moment.

'Took him for a walk yesterday and he was good. He was happy. He was sniffing. He was living his best life, there's no doubt about it.'

He continued: 'But when we got home, Barkly sat down and then just couldn't get back up.

'We knew he was close and so we made the decision that last night would be Barkly's last night with us.'

At this point, Hughesy began to choke up as he added: 'We've loved him and he has brought so much happiness to our family. We're gonna miss him.'

Hughesy went on to describe fond memories he has of Barkly, saying the pooch 'loved life' more than anything.

'What I will always carry with me with Barkly is that he loved life. He loved every day. He didn't care at all about what he looked like,' he said.

The Morning Show host Kylie Gillies wrote, 'Beautiful tribute for your little mate,' alongside a red love heart emoji.
