Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott fans are convinced they're engaged  after Love Island star covers her hand for innocent Christmas photo: 'Her ring finger is hidden!'

An innocent social media post sparked the latest round of engagement rumours as Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott wished their followers a happy Christmas on Tuesday. 

The couple - reunited following Sam's triumph on the latest series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! - shared a Boxing Day photo on their joint Instagram account, but Zara's pose inadvertently opened the floodgates to more claims of a marriage proposal. 

The former Love Island contestant, 27, holds her right hand over her left - traditionally the hand upon which engagement and wedding rings are worn - while draping her arms around Sam's neck. 

Referencing the detail, one follower wrote: 'Was absolutely certain this was a engagement announcement for a second.' 

While a second replied: 'ring finger is hidden so maybe they’re just not announcing it yet.' 

A third added: 'she has a ring on it in other pics she's defo covering it.' 

Seemingly in agreement, a fourth Instagram follower commented: 'Her ring finger is covered by her hand.' 

However others were less convinced, with one naysayer writing: 'there is no ring in the photo.' 

While a second, appearing to urge Sam into a marriage proposal, added: 'Awwwwwww, buy that ring fella!' 

The couple have been spending some quality time together after a busy few weeks, during which Sam was named King of the Jungle and Zara underwent an unexplained hospital procedure following her own TV appearance on Strictly Come Dancing. 

Zara had concerned her Instagram followers after sharing a snap from her hospital bed, but did not reveal what the procedure entailed as she posed with a cannula in her arm. 

Alongside the selfie, she wrote: 'Had a little procedure done yesterday! Now ready for a super chilled Xmas.'

The TV personality also celebrated her 27th birthday on December 14, after being reunited with Sam as he returned to the UK. 

The former Made In Chelsea star was crowned winner of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! after beating fellow finalists Tony Bellew and Nigel Farage with over 50 per cent of the public votes.

Sam was supported in Australia by best friend Pete Wicks, who had flown out to greet him in the jungle while Zara remained at the couple's home in London.

She had previously explained to fans of the show that she wouldn't be in Australia due to her stint on Strictly Come Dancing.

'Pete is going. We've had a few laughs and jokes about this,' she explained in an Instagram post.

'But in all seriousness; Sam thought I was still going to be in Strictly (bless him, the optimism), so Pete cleared his whole diary for 2/3 weeks to be there.'
