In scenes rarely seen by footy fans, Andrew Johns was lost for words on Thursday night after being left stunned by a pre-match act from an Origin youngster.

NSW Blues star Mitchell Woods is viewed as one of the best young talents in the game, and Johns was singing the halfback's praises before kick off at Leichhardt Oval.

'The young halfback from NSW Mitchell Woods, I have seen him in junior footy — he is an absolute gun,' Johns began.

'I saw him in the pathways for NSW where Freddy (former NSW coach Brad Fittler) would get different players in their positions. He was an absolute standout. You could see in training.'

Yet as Johns turned his attention to Queensland counterpart Coby Black, he was drawn by Woods's bizarre behaviour.

In a strange turn of events, the Blues gun sprayed water down his pants. 

'I don't know what Mitchell Woods is doing there — just cooling off a little bit,' Johns laughed with his Channel 9 co-commentators. 

Moving on, Johns described Woods as an 'electric runner, top-end speed, tough as they come'.

Footy pundit and Canterbury footy boss Phil Gould said he had earmarked Woods as 'a long-term halfback'.

'Yeah, well we've signed him for four years,' Gould said.

'We have invested in him. He's still in school, he's only 18 years of age, he's got another year at this level at least. And we're going to be very patient with his development. 

'He will tell us when he is ready to advance up to higher grades. But he'll play a little bit of Jersey Flegg football at the end of this year, maybe get him a NSW Cup. And he's in full-time training as of next year, he's in our top 30 next season.'

Woods has been on the books with the Bulldogs since last year, after knocking back offers from rival codes to commit to rugby league.

He was in the Sydney Swans Academy and was named a 2022 under-16 All-Australian. 

Woods helped guide NSW to a third-straight Origin victory on Thursday as the Blues defeated Queensland 14-10.
