Chiefs DE Isaiah Buggs facing animal cruelty arrest as Super Bowl champs' nightmare offseason continues

Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Isaiah Buggs is being accused of animal cruelty in the city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama in yet another shocking twist to the reigning Super Bowl champions' offseason.

Buggs is accused of leaving two dogs on his back porch of his house in Alabama in the same city as the University of Alabama, where he played football in college.

According to documents obtained by the Tuscaloosa Patch, Buggs is expected to face misdemeanor criminal charges after civil documents were filed on Wednesday.

Documents say that when Tuscaloosa Police and Animal Control officers arrived at the house at 5153 Diamond Circle, they found a Pitbull on the back porch surrounded in feces and with no access to food or water.

Additionally, first responders found a black Rottweiler mix locked in a metal cage in direct sunlight - also without access to food or water.

The civil petition says that the dogs were seized by the city due to being severely 'malnourished, emaciated and neglected.'

According to the petition, the residence appeared to be abandoned at the time of the initial call. Neighbors say the dogs had been out on the porch for at least ten days.

Investigators discovered that the house was being rented to Buggs and that his lease was terminated in April due to owing over $3,000 in back rent. Witnesses say that Buggs moved out of the house on or about March 19.

The Tuscaloosa County Animal Shelter euthanized the Pitbull after it became increasingly aggressive and failed heartworm treatment.

As for the Rottweiler mix, it tested positive for parvovirus and weighed a dangerously low 52 pounds when it arrived at the shelter. The dog is still alive and in the care of the animal shelter pending a court ruling over whether Buggs should be allowed to own it or any other animals.

Authorities have not been able to get in touch with Buggs and two misdemeanor warrants have been obtained for second-degree cruelty to dogs or cats.

Buggs was a key contributor to Alabama's 2018 national championship team and was signed to the Chiefs practice squad back on January 5 of this year after being cut by Detroit three days earlier.

Buggs is still listed on the Chiefs' roster on the team's official website as of the publication of this article.

The Kansas City Chiefs did not respond to a request for comment from DailyMail.com.

It's yet another twist in a long offseason for the defending Super Bowl champions after multiple members of the team have been arrested or have been embroiled in controversy.

Rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice allegedly hit a photographer outside a Dallas nightclub. While Dallas Police were still investigating the incident, the alleged victim signed an affidavit of non-prosecution - meaning that Rice won't face charges.

But Rice is also facing both criminal and civil trouble for a road racing incident in Dallas that led to a crash involving half-a-dozen vehicles back in March.

The Super Bowl winner is facing one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury in relation to the wreck.

In addition, two Chiefs players - Wanya Morris and Chukwuebuka Godrick - were arrested in Kansas for misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Both players were arrested and released after posting bond. They could face a fine of $2,500 and possibly a year in jail.

Additionally, controversy surrounded the Chiefs' star kicker Harrison Butker over a commencement speech he gave at Benedictine College in Kansas.

Butker congratulated the women receiving degrees at Benedictine College and said most of them were probably more excited about getting married and having children.

He also said some Catholic leaders were 'pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America.'

Butker, whose own mother is an accomplished physicist, also criticized Pride month and President Joe Biden's stance on abortion.

The controversial speech has attracted fierce backlash and, a day after his address, a petition was set up to have the Chiefs kicker removed from the team's roster ahead of the 2024 NFL season. It has now received over 228,000 signatures.
