Dennard Wilson 'leaves Philadelphia Eagles after the team hired Sean Desai over him to be defensive coordinator' - after defensive backs coach helmed the NFL's top passing defense in 2022

The Philadelphia Eagles and defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator Dennard Wilson have agreed to part ways, according to ESPN.

Wilson was passed over for the vacant defensive coordinator position that was opened when Jonathan Gannon was announced as the new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

While Wilson was viewed as a top internal candidate for the position, head coach Nick Sirianni chose to look outside of the organization - choosing former Chicago Bears DC Sean Desai for the job.

The 40-year-old Wilson has had previous stops with the St. Louis / Los Angeles Rams and the New York Jets.

At both those stops, Wilson had the title of defensive backs coach, but he had passing game coordinator added while with New York.

In Florham Park, he helped Jamal Adams earn All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors before he was eventually traded to Seattle.

Wilson moved to Philadelphia in the 2021 season and earned the passing coordinator title there as well.

During the 2022-23 season, the Eagles were the top passing defense in the league and had the second best total defense in the NFL.

DB's Darius Slay and C.J. Gardner-Johnson both publicly advocated for Wilson to get the defensive coordinator job on social media.

Wilson was interviewed along with other candidates before the Eagles decided on Desai - who spent the last season as an associate head coach with the Seahawks.

'I think we interviewed a really good group of guys and was really impressed by all of them, actually,' Sirianni said.

'Just at the end of the day, obviously some experience that Sean has had calling it, but also just I have to do what I feel is best for the team, and I felt like Sean was the best guy for the job.'
