Carson Wentz has been released by the Washington Commanders after a disappointing campaign in which he lost the starting quarterback position.
The team announced the news on Monday afternoon, with Bobby McCain also losing his roster spot in the offseason.
Wentz, 30, won the Super Bowl as Philadelphia Eagles quarterback in 2018, but has struggled to hit the same heights with both the Colts and the Commanders in the years after.
In 2022, he started the first six games of the season, going 2-4 with defeats to the Lions, Eagles, Cowboys and Titans in a row, before getting injured in a win over the Bears in Week Six.
He was placed on Injured Reserve after the finger fracture against Chicago, only returning to action in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Wentz then played in a 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 17, and then a Week 18 win over the Cowboys was his final appearance for the Commanders.
The decision leaves Washington with just Sam Howell and Taylor Heinicke as recognized quarterbacks, although the latter is set to become a free agent in March.
In a statement on their website, the team said of the decision: ' The Commanders believed that Wentz could use his veteran experience to push Washington to the playoffs, but after missing over half the season with his injury, those hopes ultimately did not pan out.'
McCain, meanwhile, joined the Commanders in 2021 and appeared in 34 games with 32 starts. He recorded 139 tackles and four interceptions.
