Steve Klauke, Salt Lake Bees broadcaster, dies at 69 after being struck by a vehicle in Sandy auto-pedestrian collision

Steve Klauke, the legendary former broadcaster for the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees, died on Monday at 69 after being struck by a vehicle. 

Klauke worked for the Bees for 29 years before retiring at the end of last season. 

Local police confirmed Klauke's passing on Tuesday and that he was hit by a pickup truck, per KSL.com. 


The Salt Lake Bees posted a statement on Klauke's passing on Monday.

'We are heartbroken to share the news that our beloved former broadcaster Steve Klauke passed away this morning,' the statement read on X. 'Steve was an incredible broadcaster, amazing friend and devoted husband and father. He will forever be "the voice of the Bees."'

Salt Lake has been the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels since 2001, after a seven-season relationship with the Minnesota Twins. 

Emergency crews originally responded to a report of a man who had been struck shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday in nearby Sandy. 

Local authorities said Klauke was struck while a pickup truck was making a right-hand turn into the roadway while he was crossing the street. 

Klauke was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he eventually died from his injuries, per KSL. 

The driver of the truck reportedly remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. 

The NBA's Utah Jazz also posted a statement on Klauke's passing. 

'The Utah Jazz family is heartbroken by the sudden passing of Steve Klauke, voice of the Salt Lake Bees for three decades, longtime member of the Jazz broadcast team, and father to Jazz equipment manager, Adam Klauke.' the statement read on X. 

'A legendary sports broadcaster, Steve was admired and loved by many. He will be greatly missed, and his contributions will continue to have an indelible impact on the Utah sports community. Our thoughts are with Adam, Steve’s wife, Sue, and their daughter, Lisa,' the statement continued.
