Matildas star Katrina Gorry drops bombshell news about her Olympics chances - and opens up on life with her newborn baby son

  • Initial fears Gorry, 31, wouldn't play after ankle surgery
  • Midfielder recently became a mother for the second time

Matildas star midfielder Katrina Gorry has confirmed she will play at the Paris Olympics after recent ankle surgery -  before opening up on how she's dealing with life as a mum with a newborn son.

Gorry, 31, initially feared she wouldn't be named in Tony Gustavsson's squad, but the West Ham star is currently in the south of Spain on a national team camp alongside the likes of Caitlin Foord, Mary Fowler and Kyra Cooney-Cross.

The veteran left nothing to chance following her syndesmosis rupture in April - and is now ready to play a key role as the Matildas push for an Olympic medal.

'I did a lot of running sessions and rehab [in Sweden] by myself, tried to get myself fit and back in the team,' she told the Sydney Morning Herald.

'I've been in full training for the last couple of weeks, and haven't missed a beat really. It has been really nice to be back.'

Gorry's focus has been equally sharp off the pitch.

Her Swedish fiancée Clara Markstedt recently gave birth to the couple's second child - a brother, Koby, for Harper, who doubles as the Matildas' unofficial team mascot.

'We are trying to figure out how to juggle two kids,' Gorry said.

'We had to wait until the little one came into the world to see what it looked like, but the national team have been really supportive of everything.

'So Clara and the kids are here, mum will meet us over in France just to help out a little bit more, and then everything goes on as usual.'

The Matildas take on Germany in their Group B Games opener in Marseille on July 26 AEST.

Next will be a trip to Nice to face Zambia on July 28, before rounding out their group fixtures with the USWNT back in Marseille on July 31.

After missing the Tokyo Games in 2021 after giving birth to Harper, Gorry knows this Olympics will probably be her last.

'For me, the main focus was to get myself here fit and healthy,' she said.

'An Olympic Games is always a special tournament. As a kid you grow up wanting to be an Olympian. It will be special to me.'
