The FA are yet to draw up a shortlist of candidates to replace Gareth Southgate despite uncertainty over the manager’s position beyond Euro 2024.

The ideal scenario for the FA is for England to have a successful tournament and Southgate to extend his current deal, which expires at the end of the year.

But if England flop in Germany, Southgate would come under significant pressure from supporters to go. And while the FA would prefer to agree fresh terms with Southgate to keep him in charge for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA, they accept the 53-year-old may want to move on.

FA sources have indicated that their commitment to Southgate remains strong and the governing body do not want to take steps towards identifying his successor while he remains in position.

Southgate will discuss his future with FA chief executive Mark Bullingham after Euro 2024, by which time a clearer picture should have emerged. There are few obvious candidates to replace Southgate, although Newcastle’s Eddie Howe has admirers at the FA.

However, Mail Sport understands Howe, 46, has little desire to swap club management for the England job at this stage, even if he has ambitions to one day manage his country.

For now, Howe is excited by the project he has started on Tyneside and sees himself best served by working with players in training every day, rather than intermittently as would be the case with England. His family are also settled in Newcastle.

Graham Potter is available but his inactivity since being sacked by Chelsea in April 2023 may count against him.

The FA would be open to appointing a foreign manager, which would bring two more ex-Chelsea bosses, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel, into the equation. Both are open to taking the England job.
