Footy star rocked by devastating tragedy as father passes away following battle with illness

The footy world has wrapped its arms around Elliot Yeo after the gun West Coast Eagles star lost his father, Craig, on Monday night.

The AFL club released a statement on Tuesday to send its 'heartfelt condolences' to Yeo and his family. 

'The club will provide support to Elliot during this difficult time and requests that his family's privacy is respected,' the Eagles said. 


Perth Now reports that Craig died following a battle with ilness. 

Yeo, 30, signed a new three-year deal with the Eagles last week but was absent from training on Monday following the family tragedy.

He featured in the team's defeat by Essendon at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on Sunday, with the squad returning to Perth that evening.

Just hours after his death, Craig received a posthumous award in recognition of his contribution to the hospitaly industry at the Australian Hotels Associations awards ceremony at Crown Towers on Monday night.

Elliot's brother Corey, who was a former player, accepted the award on his father's behalf. 

Last month, Elliot announced he is expecting a baby with his fiancee, Tess Goodbody, having got engaged last year.

It remains unclear whether he will feature in the Eagles' next match, against Hawthorn at Optus Stadium on Sunday.
