England Euros semi-final tickets skyrocket to £16,000 as demand rises for Netherlands showdown while fans already face rising hotel prices for few rooms left in Dortmund

Sore-headed England fans yesterday began a desperate scramble amid their hangovers for tickets and accommodation for the Three Lions' semi- final showdown against the Netherlands.

Hotel prices for the few rooms left in Dortmund on Wednesday night have typically quadrupled from their normal level – while match tickets are selling for as much as 20 times their face value on resale websites.

Prime seats by the halfway line are being listed for more than £16,000 while even the cheapest spots, usually advertised at £70, are barely available for less than £600.

Ticketless fans already in Germany or those who plan to fly over from the UK will be at the mercy of these websites as England's official travel club only has 6,500 tickets available in a ballot.

Back in Dusseldorf – the scene of Saturday night's penalty shoot-out success against Switzerland – hair of the dog was the order of the day for many England fans that lined the bars.

But if the local beer wasn't enough to give them a headache, the price of hotels for the semi-final was guaranteed to cause some pain.

The Hotel Unique Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, for example, is listed on websites at £1,521 for Wednesday's clash.

But the same sort of room a week later is priced at £69. The Mail yesterday spoke to fans trying to extend their stay in Germany after Saturday's success.

Investment firm worker Rhys Godden, 28, travelled to Dusseldorf from Southampton on Thursday with two friends and was set to return home today.

He said he was also due back at work but 'would have to ring the boss in the morning', adding: 'He isn't a huge football fan, but I'm sure he'll understand.'

Mr Godden said they had found a triple room on the outskirts of Dortmund for £1,000 for three nights.

Paul and Claire Scott, from Rotherham, were hoping to see the Netherlands game. 'I will have to go home after that though,' Mrs Scott, 44, added. 'I can't leave the kids with my mother any longer.'
