Woman in her 40s is found dead at Isle of Wight festival campsite on same day fire breaks out at event

A woman has been found dead at one of the campsites at the Isle of Wight festival.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, died on the same day a fire broke out at the festival — though the two are not thought to be related.

Police rushed to the scene just before 11am yesterday following reports of a 'sudden death' at one of the campsites at the festival.

The woman's death is not being treated as suspicious and her family have been made aware.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesman said: 'We were called at 10.51am yesterday (20/6) to a report of a sudden death in the campsite of Isle of Wight festival.

A festival spokesman told Metro: 'The team at the Isle of Wight festival are deeply saddened by the passing of a festivalgoer on Thursday morning.

'Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with her family and friends.'

The Isle of Wight festival began with a series of festivals between 1968 and 1970, widely acknowledged as Europe's equivalent of Woodstock.

There was no Isle of Wight festival between 1970 and 2002, but John Giddings, an established music promoter, seized the opportunity to re-launch it.

Since 2002, the Isle of Wight festival stages have hosted bands such as The Rolling Stones, Muse, Foo Fighters, Kasabian, Kings of Leon, The Strokes, Coldplay, The Sex Pistols, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Blondie and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

In addition, solo performances over the years have included David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Jay-Z and Amy Winehouse.
