Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey hurtled himself down a giant slip 'n slide in an inflatable ring for his latest general election stunt this morning.

The Lib Dem leader - known for his love of attention-grabbing antics for his party - clambered to the top of the 'ultimate' slip and slide in Frome, Somerset at around 10am today.

Donning a grey rash vest and a pair of trunks, he climbed into a rubber ring at the summit of the more than 300ft tall yellow and green water slide, before hurtling himself down at great speed.

The election stunt was to promote the Lib Dem's new policy on child mental health. The party say they would treble taxes for search engine and social media firms and use the money to employ mental health care professionals in schools as children in need are being being 'left in limbo'.

They would raise the Digital Services Tax - currently 2% on search engine, social media and online market place companies' revenues.

Sir Ed said: 'Thousands of children are being left in limbo, forced to suffer intolerably long waits for mental health treatment. They are being failed by this Conservative government who have neglected the NHS and abandoned parents and children.

'Liberal Democrats would put a dedicated, qualified mental health professional in every school both primary and secondary, funded by a tax on the social media giants that are such a big part of the problem.

'Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to get rid of this appalling Conservative government and fix the health and care crisis.'

According to House of Commons Library research, which the party has published, 336,885 children and young people were on a mental health waiting list in the quarter ending in March throughout England, with hotspots in Birmingham and Solihull (17,035 patients), Kent and Medway (15,550) and Coventry and Warwickshire (15,500).

Speaking to Sky News reporter Matthew Thompson while sharing a dinghy at the top of the slide, Sir Ed said: 'We can win seats across the Conservatives across the West Country. Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, Dorset - all the West Country is a target for us.

'And today we are talking both about small businesses - this is an amazing [slip 'n slide] business in half term getting lots of business... it's a great tourist area.

'But we're also talking about mental health today - the need to make sure we have mental health professionals in every primary and secondary school, and mental health is all about giving people lots of fun to do.'

'So I think we can go,' the Lib Dem leader said as he started to push off.

'Are you afraid of looking a little bit silly,' the reporter asked. Sir Ed replied: 'No, no, this is fun, enjoy yourself.'

The pair then shot of fthe top of the slide laughing as they fell. 'It's a tough gig but someone's gotta' do it,' quipped Mr Thompson at the base.

It was just the latest in a lengthy series of set-up stunts that have included yesterday Ed Davey being seen with his legs spread wide open as he rode a bike during a visit to Knighton in Wales while on the campaign trail.

It came after he repeatedly and deliberately fell from a paddleboard at Lake Windermere on Tuesday, the scene of a highly controversial effluent spillage in February.

Earlier this month it was claimed million of litres of raw sewage were 'illegally pumped' into the Lake District beauty spot by United Utilities after a fault was not corrected for hours.

Sir Ed accused Tory ministers of 'sitting on their hands' and allowing firms to get away with pumping poo into waterways.

'These disgraced firms are destroying our treasured lakes and rivers with their filthy sewage dumping - hitting human health, harming our precious environment and damaging the local tourism economy all at the same time,' he said.

The Liberal Democrat leader made, and then ate, the frozen treat as he teamed up with local candidate Josh Babarinde and party supporters in the East Sussex town.

Eastbourne is among a string of 'Blue Wall' seats the Lib Dems are targeting on 4 July.

Earlier this year, Sir Davey also lived up to his usual antics by delivering a speech in front of a giant blue hour glass with the words 'Time's Running Out Rishi!'.

The visual stunt was aimed to kick forward the Liberal Democrats' local election campaign.

Back in March last year, Davey again flamboyantly launched the Liberal Democrats' local election campaign by driving a tractor through a stack of blue-coloured hay bales in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.

It symbolised the party's desire to knock down the 'blue wall' of Conservative constituencies in the Home Counties.

He said: 'People are having to wait hours for an ambulance, weeks for a GP appointment or months for urgent cancer treatment as the NHS crisis spirals out of control.

'But the Conservatives have failed to deliver the new hospitals they promised and are breaking their pledge to recruit more GPs. It shows this Conservative government is out of touch, out of ideas and out of excuses.'

The Lib Dem leader has become accustomed with blunt metaphor photoshoots, including when he smashed a wall of blue bricks with a hammer after their victory in the Chesham and Amersham by-election last year.

Sir Davey's embarrassing flop into the water was nearly matched by David Cameron's extremely frothy pint which he pulled in Macclesfield.

But it was nothing compared to when Rishi Sunak's football skills were ridiculed, including by the Labour party, when he kicked a ball around with children while in Chesham, Buckinghamshire.
