Balmoral is now serving pizza that's fit for a king

  • Visitors to the estate on Royal Deeside can tuck in to an upper crust treat
  • Royal pizzeria's menu includes one named after the castle - topped with haggis, bacon and chicken

He is better known for serving up organic oatcakes, jams and other upmarket groceries under his Duchy Originals brand.

But King Charles has now turned his hand to fast food – launching an upper crust pizzeria at Balmoral Castle.

Exclusive versions of the Italian dish are on sale at the castle, in Aberdeenshire, for up to £15 a pizza.

The monarch began the pizzeria venture last month inside the Mews Café on the Balmoral estate.

The menu includes a £14 King’s Garden veggie pizza and the £15 Balmoral which is topped with chicken, bacon and haggis.

A tasty Mews Café pizza

The vegetarian pizza is made with ingredients grown in the Balmoral estate grounds and prepared by royal caterers.

Traditional options are also available. Margheritas and pepperoni pizzas are being sold for £13 and £14.50, respectively.

Visitors can enjoy the pizzas either inside the Mews Café – surrounded by pictures of the Royal Family – or on the picnic benches outside.

King Charles is following in the footsteps of Scots singer Lewis Capaldi and celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo, who have both launched their own pizza ranges.

The King is no stranger to setting up his own brand and the pizzeria follows the success of his Duchy Originals line.

The then Prince of Wales is given a pizza during a visit to St Boswells in the Borders in 2019

Duchy Originals entered a partnership with supermarket chain Waitrose in 2009 and is now one of the nation’s top organic food brands.

Founded in 1990 to market produce grown on the Highgrove House estate in Gloucestershire, the Duchy range began with oat cakes but has since expanded to include fish, bakery items and fresh vegetables.

King Charles’s latest venture is already proving to be a hit with visitors.

Lyndsay Ross, 41, told The Sun: ‘They are pretty good pizzas.

'Definitely a meal fit for a King. You can taste the quality.

‘It’s much better than a Domino’s or a Pizza Hut.

'They better watch their backs.’

Balmoral is now open on specific dates over the autumn and winter months for royal watchers and pizza-lovers alike.
