What Prince William would have been named (if Charles had managed to have his way)
If Prince Charles had managed to have his way, his elder son would have been called Arthur.
It was an intriguing wish, for it would have meant that Charles would have been succeeded by a King Arthur – the same name as the legendary, fictional hero who presided over Britain in medieval times.
Princess Diana, however, had objected. Indeed, she and Charles argued over what to call their son.

In the end, a compromise was reached and William was chosen, with Arthur as his second name.
Diana also won the toss over what to call their second son. Instead of Henry or Harry, Charles had wanted Albert – the real Christian name of his grandfather, King George VI, who adopted the name when he became King.
