Young Liberals are blasted over 'tasteless' meme capitalising on THAT Oscars moment

  • The Young Liberals have been blasted after sharing a meme on their Twitter page
  • The meme was made using a pic of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars
  •  The youth movement created the meme to attack the Labor party on Twitter
  • Many Twitter users slammed the meme as 'tasteless,' 'crude' and inappropriate

The Young Liberals have been slammed over a meme the party's youth body created using a picture of Will Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars.

The group shared their meme of the face slap incident from the 94th Academy Awards to their Twitter account as a way to attack the Labor party.

The face slap incident saw Hollywood actor Will Smith, 53, walk across the stage and slap host Chris Rock, 57, across the face after the comedian made a crass joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's hair loss.

He then took a seat and warned Rock to 'keep my wife's name out your f**king mouth'.

The Young Liberals were just one of thousands of groups and individuals across the world to use a screenshot of the exact moment Smith hit Rock and turn it into a meme.

The youth movement put the words 'Hardworking Australians' over Rock and 'Labor's Higher Taxes' over Smith.

They captioned their tweet: 'Labor can't manage money, that's why they come after yours'.

It didn't take long for the group to be blasted over social media, with many criticising the meme as 'tasteless' and 'crude'.

Some took issue with the Young Liberals capitalising on a moment of violence to convey their message - while others claimed it was 'cheap politicking' ahead of the federal election, which is expected to be called any day now.

'This is why people perceive young Liberals as complete wankers...apologise and remove the tweet,' wrote one user.

'The Young Liberals used the image of 'the slap' to deride Labor in a campaign approach. So typical of the LNP to use an example of male violence while claiming, falsely, they manage money well,' tweeted another.

A third added in reference to the movement's name: 'When you say 'young' Liberals / just how young are we talking ? Because 7 year old boys are smarter and funnier than this..'

Julia Banks, a lawyer former Liberal MP who has been extremely critical of the Liberals after quitting the party in 2018 following the leadership coup against Malcolm Turnbull, also gave her opinion on the meme.

'There is so much to unpack in this disgusting political advertisement. All I can say is that sadly it's not surprising,' she said.

'They start Young in the Liberal Party to nurture their toxic masculine culture.'

The meme has since been deleted from the Young Liberals' Twitter page.
