1 Wide-leg wonders with stretchy waists
It’s the trouser shape of this season and the next, as seen on the spring/summer catwalks at Stella McCartney and Chloe.
This is great news: not only are wide-legged trousers leg-lengthening and flattering they are also comfortable.
Look for a playful pair in a bright colour.
This fabulous red design is especially forgiving with its semi-elasticated waist (were £169, now £84, meandem.com).
I love this bright purple pair, also available in black, which will look fabulous dressed down with box-fresh white trainers and a smart shirt for the office and teamed with an oversized knit at the weekend.

2 Cashmere for less cash
A new, super-soft cashmere sweater is the ultimate luxury, and generous sales discounts make it an affordable investment. There are some fabulous options at Chinti & Parker (stripy sweater, below left, was £375, now £112.50, chintiandparker.com); H&M (grey cashmere, above, was £79.99, now £40, hm.com) and M&S (spot cashmere jumper, below right, was £99 now £57.50, marksandspencer.com)
3 Skirt shape for ALL seasons
Multi-tiered skirts are set to be a mainstay for spring 2019 and beyond. They are surprisingly easy to wear, but if you want to avoid adding bulk to hips and thighs go for a style that doesn’t get interesting until below the knee.
Wear yours now with a cashmere jumper and knee-high boots (tiered skirt, pictured left, was £79.99, now £29.99, zara.com) and as summer rolls around add a camisole top or T-shirt with sandals.
This pretty print wrap skirt, right, from Ganni (was £160, now £80, Ganni at irisfashion.co.uk) will be a great investment for those special occasions come spring.
If you have an hourglass figure go for a lightweight top that tucks in easily.
If you’d rather conceal your middle section go for an oversized jumper which hangs lower.
Avoid metallic or sequinned skirts — they are too festive and you won’t wear them all year round.
4 Go West for summer
Ankle boots can be worn with dresses, skirts and trousers but the style to snap up now is the Western. A huge hit on the spring/summer catwalks, these will look great in winter with dresses and black opaque tights and, when it warms up, bare legs are the order of the day.
This striking design from Russell & Bromley comes in a soft suede, but don’t worry about scuffs and scratches because they’ll only look even better with age (western boots, were £295, now £175, russellandbromley.co.uk).
5 Granny scarf’s a must
The silk scarf is set to return as a serious fashion statement this year, so get ahead of the curve and snap one up in the sales.
You’re looking for classic scarf prints and striking colours in luxurious silks. Worn around the head, in your hair, as a neck tie or as an accessory on a bag or belt, ‘grandma’ scarves are set to be seriously cool. With heavy discounts available you could treat yourself to a luxe one from Liberty, pictured (was £195, now £97, libertylondon.com) but if that’s still out of your price range the High Street has a great selection (Model shot, above: print scarf, was £12.99, now £9.99, mango.com)
6 The Mac Factor
Beige is a key hue for spring, so if you don’t have a classic belted Mac in your cupboard it’s a wise sales investment. Length is key — look for a style that falls below your knee. Wear it layered over a thick knit or hooded jumper and with a lightweight dress when the weather has improved. Try Zara’s striking camel mac pictured right (was £95.99, now £69.99, zara.com). Or an oversized design from Marks & Spencer is available in black or classic beige and has a detachable hood which you can remove on warmer days (Trench coat, was £99, now £74, marksandspencer.com)
7 Bag yourself a winter bargain
A small crossbody bag works for winter or summer, day or night, dressed up or down, so it’s a wise sales buy and there are some beautiful bags to choose from.
Blow the budget at Mulberry (this small Darley, was £650, now £455) and you’ll be carrying this treasure for the next six years at least. But if you’re not ready to part with that kind of cash, how about Jigsaw’s suede/leather mix Milas bag? (was £130, now £79, jigsaw-online.com)
8 Dress it up — and down
The midi dress was a hit last season and it’s going to be even bigger in 2019. But weed out styles without a high neck. Ruffles are good and drop hems. Long sleeves can be pushed up in spring. Boden has some fabulous styles at John Lewis (Iona midi dress, pictured left, was £98, now £68.60, johnlewis.com) and Zara, right, has a plethora of prints to choose from (floral print, was £79.99, now £39.99, zara.com).
